Just found blog! So excited. Searching for parents of my Elizabeth Miller. She is connected to the William Miller/ Rebecca Bradford family. Need to correspond with Chalmers Williams.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth is probably daughter of Andrew Miller, who is brother or cousin of William; or dau of one of William’s other brothers or cousins.
Elizabeth Miller was born 8th of June, 1772, in Maryland, or Delaware Co, PA. In 1880 Elizabeth's three living children each reported independently that Elizabeth was born in Maryland.
Elizabeth Miller m. Adam McGowan abt 1791, probably in Maryland. Adam was b. Maryland, parents unknown. Family lore says an orphan. In 1878 interview, oldest child Rachel, reported she was born in "Delaware County Maryland" 22 August 1792 Every census 1850 - 1880 shown born Maryland. So, probably born Maryland in area near Delaware Co, PA. or state of Delaware - perhaps Cecil Co.
First documented evidence found for Elizabeth Miller McGowan and Adam McGowan are the 1796 - 1801 tax records for Fayette County, PA. In 1796 Adam McGowen is listed as a farmer with 1 horse and one cow living on "Millers land" in a cabin. He is listed just 8 persons from William Miller, who owns 450 acres with a house, barn, 4 horses and 3 cows. William Miller and wife Rebecca Bradford Miller are certainly close relatives of Elizabeth Miller McGowan, but not her parents, as she is not listed in William Miller's probate record. William Miller came from Cecil County, Maryland. Among children listed in William Miller's probate record are sons Abraham (who m. Nancy Blackburn) and Samuel Miller (who m. Rachel Dawson). Both of these sons of William went to the same neighborhood in Ohio where Adam and Elizabeth Miller McGowan settled in 1809.
The 1800 census for Tyrone Twp (where he had moved to by 1798) , Fayette Co, PA shows Adam McGowen with 3 males under 10; 1 male 26-45, 3 females under 10, and 2 females 16 - 26.
From 1805 - 1808 Adam and Elizabeth lived in Mercer Co, PA, where they owned a small parcel of land. The area where they lived is just over the border from Poland, Ohio. He is in tax records, but genealogist there could not find any deed record.
On 30 Nov 1808 Samuel Miller, son of William Miller, obtained a certificate from the Steubenville, Ohio Land office for land in Smith Twp, Columbiana Co, Ohio. On 22 June 1809 Adam and Elizabeth Miller McGowan obtained a certificate for land in the same town and county. Family lore states that Adam and Elizabeth first lived in Poland, Ohio, which is where Samuel Miller was reported to have been married.
In 1820 both Abraham and Samuel Miller were close neighbors of Adam McGowan in Knox Twp, Columbiana Co, Ohio. They remained close neighbors for the rest of their lives in Smith Twp, Colulmbiana/Mahoning Co, Ohio
One Rootsweb entry states that William Miller of Fayette Co, PA, had a cousin, Captain Andrew Miller, but no citation. Other sources show that Andrew may have been William's brother. A good possibility is that this Andrew Miller is the father of Elizabeth. This would match naming patterns of the German and Scottish. Eliz and Adam’s sons in birth order were Samuel, Andrew. Adam, John and Beniah. Their daughters in birth order were Rachel, Mary, Elizabeth, Anna, Rebecca and Deborah. One Andrew Miller of Cecil Co, Maryland had a wife, Mary. This does not fit the naming pattern, but still name of 2nd daughter.
Elizabeth's tombstone Hartzell Cemetery: 73 years and 9 months old when d.

ReplyDeleteRe: James Miller - 4 (William, Abraham, David), B: 21 Jun 1781, D: 12 Dec 1849 in Carroll, Washington, PA, M: 10 May 1810 in Poland, Mahoning, OH, Mary Dawson; Lived in Mercer Co, PA.
ReplyDeleteIn 1808 both Adam McGowan h/o Elizabeth Miller (possible Andrew, Abraham, David) and James Miller paid taxes in Mahoning Twp, Mercer (now Lawrence) Co, PA. Anyone have more documentation of James Miller in Mercer County PA?
Looks like James Miller and Adam McGowan went from Fayette PA to Mercer Co, PA, then to Poland, Mahoninig Co, Ohio; Then Adam McGowan along with James' brothers Abraham and Samuel Miller, who were in Poland, went to Smith Twp, Columbiana/now Mahoning, Ohio abt 1810/11, and James Miller moved back to PA at some point. Anyone have a year to year time line of these three Miller brothers moves from Fayette PA between 1800 and 1811? If marriage info is correct they were in Poland in 1810 and then possibly in Columbiana Co in 1811, so move pretty precise there.
Still also looking for more info on Andrew - 3, probable son of Abraham - 2 (David - 1). A good bet he is father of my Elizabeth Miller.
