Another Samuel Bradford??

Below is a Delaware Will Inventory for a Samuel Bradford ("deceased") of New Castle County, Delaware, dated October 23, 1775. So which Samuel Bradford is this??

Here is what we know about our three Samuel Bradford's:

1.   Samuel Bradford who is our Rebecca Bradford Miller's father died about 1782, too late for this inventory to be pertinent (he had also moved to nearby Cecil County, Maryland).

2.   Samuel Bradford of New Castle County, DE, our Rebecca's cousin (grandson of Red Lion Sam) died September 24, 1790, so that is too late for this to be his inventory.

3.  Samuel Bradford ("Red Lion Sam"), our Rebecca's grandfather, died April 20, 1767, in New Castle County, DE, and we do have his will (see post entitled "A Signature Over 200 Years Old" . Could it be that an inventory of his goods was done 8 years later?

Please let me know your opinion by leaving a comment below.

In the meantime, enjoy reading a portion of this inventory. No matter whose it is, these documents provide such a fascinating look into the past! (Does anyone know what standard of living this inventory indicates for 1775?)

  1. Check the dates for the wife of #3 . She might have passed close to this time and they might have been settling the will because of this

  2. Sherrie,

Thanks for the great tip! I hadn't thought of that. That makes me very excited to think that this might actually be the Inventory of Red Lion Sam. Good sleuthing!

    Thanks!
